What Are the Benefits of an eSIM?

Written by Tim Mugabi

In our first post, we gave you a summary of eSIM technology and only briefly touched upon its many benefits. In this post, we take a more detailed look into the advantages of eSIMs and why you’re going to want one – sooner rather than later. Let’s dive in!

Cheaper International SIM Plans

eSIMs allow you to purchase international data plans that connect with a local network in the country you’re travelling to. These plans can be up to 90% cheaper than international roaming charges – and you won’t be blindsided by a huge phone bill when you get back home!

More Convenient

eSIMs eliminate the need for a physical SIM card and make activating a new service a 100% digital process. This makes signing up to a network provider much faster and far more convenient.

For a start, when you travel, eSIMs enable you to pick your international data plan before you leave. Instead of having to find the prepaid SIM booths in the Arrivals Hall after a long flight, crawling through customs, and anxiously waiting at baggage claim – you’ll be connected as soon as you’re allowed to switch off flight mode!

Better still, if your trip takes in multiple countries, you can even purchase plans for each destination ahead of time and simply switch between them in your settings as you travel.

Additionally, Travel eSIMs are much more convenient than changing network providers at home. In doing away with plastic SIMs, you’re no longer required to head into a Telco store to arrange a new data plan. You also don’t wait to receive a new SIM in the post after choosing your new plan online. Instead, you can sign up for a new plan or network provider with a few taps on your screen.

This not only gives you instant connectivity but makes the process of switching between plans or telco providers seamless.

One of the major benefits of eSIMs is being able to arrange international data plans before you set off! Your days of depending on coffee shop Wi-Fi will be behind you.

More Secure

If you’re a digital nomad or road warrior who usually relies on cafés or hotels to get online, you’ll be relieved to know that eSIMs are not only more reliable than public Wi-Fi, but also more secure. With an eSIM-equipped device, you’re not as at risk of being targeted by hackers as you are on an unsecured, public Wi-Fi connection.

Better yet, eSIMs offer additional security benefits over removable SIM cards. Due to their solid-state nature, eSIMs have extra security layers to protect you from SIM-jacking, port-out fraud, and other phone scams.

Better Hardware

eSIMs eliminate the need for a physical SIM slot, which gives manufacturers more room to play with when designing mobile devices – particularly when it comes to wearables like smartwatches.

eSIMs allow companies to build smaller devices that have increased battery life, are more water and dust proof, and contain larger (i.e., more powerful) chipsets. For a great example of this, look no further than the eSIM-only Motorola RAZR 4G 2019.

eSIMs allow manufacturers to create better devices with longer lifespans, as they don’t have to fit components around a SIM card slot.

More competition

By removing physical SIM cards from the equation, the cost of onboarding new customers for network providers falls. Telcos will save on the costs of manufacturing, storing, and shipping SIM cards – and it won’t be necessary to operate retail stores to reach new customers. All of which allows more players to enter the market. This creates more competition within the telco industry: bringing down prices while raising customer service levels for consumers – a huge win!
